![]() I think we already have enough case studies. It'd be an interesting case study but probably make for an awful game. Some people might be more selective but a ton of players will learn multiple combat styles. It all just depends on what skills you chose to learn. In one fight, you might be the designated mage but in another fight you might be a DPS ranger. Maybe a team wipe mechanic where you need a mage class to throw up a protective barrier.ĭuring the ent phase, you could have flying enemies that have to be taken out quickly or stunned out of the sky for melee players to be able to attack. In order to take it's shield down you need some melee classes to wield axes specifically to chop down some enchanted ents. Like say, a boss that can only be damaged with a bow as it's on a platform and has tons of magic resistance. ![]() Where not only does a boss have multiple mechanics which force teamwork and cooperation. I could see this type of system being introduced into a modern mmorpg. You might take a crossbow for one enemy/boss, a blowpipe for another, a mace for another and a sword/whip for another. In OSRS, certain enemies have weaknesses to things like ranged damage, crush damage, slash damage. This is why I love OSRS, though it could be a lot more detailed in a more modern mmo. B is good against single slow but heavy hits. A is good against hordes of enemies and flurries of fast hits. B survives that big hit because 50% of 10k is only 5k rather than 500k. 50% of 1m still kills you if you only have 10k hp. Imagine one player has a skill that grants 50% resistance to physical damage, and another player has a skill that prevents an attack from damaging more than 50% of their health in a single hit, and a player that heals at an inverse percentage of their health. That gives space for things like unique skills or rare occurrences. Arguably some content should only be achievable using very specific circumstances which are not about Numbers Go Up. Not all party compositions need to be able to complete all content. Not all players need to be able to solo all content. Diagonal game design instead of just vertical, with less focus on Better and more focus on Different. Or a boss that can't be killed with arrows because it has stealth and can only be spotted from close distances.Ī fundamental principle of these stories is that the system can't be balanced, and it doesn't have to be either. Or a boss that can't be killed with melee because it keeps teleporting around and throwing fireballs at you. It doesn't matter if you do 100m crit hits, because it can't die and just keeps healing like Wolverine. Imagine a boss that you literally cannot kill without Arcane damage. Or if curses are common and you need a Mage to dispel it. Such as if mages are literally the only ones who can deal Arcane damage, and there are monsters who can regenerate from other damage types like Slashing or Piercing or Force.
